247Cinema Review: Should You Watch Pokémon Detective Pikachu?? 27-06-2019

What is it? Remember playing Pokémon Go a few summers ago? What about playing Pokémon when you were growing up with the cards or on your Nintendo device? Even if you didn’t play ANY of the above, you definitely know someone who did. We all do! Pokémon is the world’s highest-grossing media franchise of all time with an audience that spans over multiple generations. Pokémon Detective Pikachu puts a new spin onto things as the popular video game turns into a live-action film. In the film, Pikachu collaborates with Tim, the human, to solve the murder mystery of Tim’s father.

When? Released in China’s cinemas on May 10, 2019.

Who’s in it? Ryan Reynolds voices Pikachu and delivers a hilarious and witty performance. Justice Smith stars as Tim.

Why should I watch it? You should watch the movie because it is the best-reviewed live-action film adaptation of a video game on Rotten Tomatoes. It is also the sixth highest grossing film of 2019 so far. It is just really cool to see live action Pokémon on the screen if you have grown up with the franchise. The movie offers a look into what the world would be like if we actually had Pokémons, and it is a very interesting world at that, delivered with lots of humour.

In addition to being a hilarious movie, Pokémon Detective Pikachu introspectively deals with a lot of interesting reflections to the moral reality in the Poké-verse. However, some people have said that there were a few plot points missing. Nonetheless, for more mature audiences, Pokémon Detective Pikachu is the perfect choice if you are down to just have some good laughs and reminisce on some childhood nostalgia. For younger kids, this one is sure to please with its wonderful animations and hilarity.

Where? Pokémon Detective Pikachu is set in Ryme City, a rare metropolis where Pokémon and humans live as equals. But you can buy tickets to see the movie here at movie theatres in Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen. Last time to catch it before it goes off the screens soon!
